Structural Sealant and Seal Restoration
General structural sealing, sealant-removal and seal-restoration principles.
Key reference points
- Sealant selection depends on environment and compatibility.
- Removal tools must not damage the structure.
- Preserve designed drainage and ventilation paths.
Organised training notes
1Match sealant to the application
Fluid exposure, temperature, pressure, material compatibility and cure conditions influence the approved sealant system.
2Restore disturbed faying seals
Panel or repair-part removal can break a faying-surface seal. Reinstallation may require complete seal restoration.
3Use non-damaging removal tools
Remove cured sealant with approved tools and methods that do not scratch, gouge or contaminate metal or composite surfaces.
4Keep drains and vents open
Do not block designed drain holes, vent paths or other openings while sealing a repair.
5Inspect before resealing
After removal, inspect for scratches, scribe marks, corrosion and other damage before surface preparation and resealing.
