Tube Bending, Flaring and Flareless Preset
General quality controls for aircraft tube bending, flaring and flareless sleeve preset.
Key reference points
- Use tooling matched to tube size and material.
- Prevent flattening, wrinkling and sealing-surface damage.
- Inspect formed ends against the approved acceptance criteria.
Organised training notes
1Match the forming tool
Former, guide, dies, bushes, sleeve and preset tooling must match the tube outside diameter, wall and material.
2Control the bend
Maintain the specified bend radius and angle without flattening, wrinkling, scoring or twisting the tube.
3Prepare the tube end
Cut square, remove burrs and clean the inside and outside without reducing wall thickness or scratching the sealing area.
4Form the flare or sleeve
Use the specified projection, forming sequence and tool setting so the flare or preset sleeve forms correctly.
5Inspect before installation
Check for cracks, uneven flare, incorrect sleeve position, excessive or insufficient preset, surface damage and dimensional errors.
